Too Sick for Daycare?

Too Sick for Daycare?

sick-kidSick days are inevitable, especially with the change of seasons that happens here in Minnesota. When the brutal cool temperatures of fall and winter finally start to settle in, catching a cold becomes all the more likely. There are definitely days where making it through a day of sniffles is something we’re capable of doing, but in a daycare, where your child is surrounded by countless other children who are exposed to their siblings and children outside of daycare, coming to school sick could pose as a greater issue. If your child is sick, and you’re unsure of whether or not your child should be going into daycare, here are a few things that you should take the time to think over before making up your mind.

Signs & Symptoms

Most serious illnesses will show up with some signs and symptoms. Depending on what it is that your child has come down with, you should take note of what signs and symptoms they are showing. Take a look at how bad the symptoms that they’re showing are. Is their temperature pushing a fevere? How badly is their nose running? Does their cough hurt them? Once you’ve gaged just how bad the symptoms are, you can gain an idea if time spent at daycare is going to improve their health or only leave them drained at the end of the day. It’s also a great way to at least gain some sort of idea as to how ill your child is and whether or not professional care is needed. Another great way to look at the situation is to consider whether or not you’d want a child with those symptoms around your kiddo. If the answer is no, then it’s probably best to take the day off.

sickkidDaycare Expectations & Regulations

There are certain standards in place in order for children to maintain a healthy and safe lifestyle while they are at our daycare. One of those factors is in relation to the health of the children that we take care of. If your child is throwing up, has diarrhea or is highly contagious, then we ask that you please keep your child home until they are well enough to be coming to daycare without putting other children at risk. At Little Newtons, we do our absolute best to provide your child with an experience that is only going to enhance their development and propel them to learn more. Doing this is difficult to do when a child requires more care because they are sick.

Mom & Dad Know Best

While there are plenty of ways that you can go about determining if your child is too sick for going to school, for the most part is entirely your choice. You know your child better than we ever could, and if you can tell that they’re going to be miserable all day at daycare and could possibly transfer their illness to other children, then it’s better to keep them home where they can rest and get back to good health in time to head back to daycare!
